"Why is Mi-A-Kon-Da different? I can't count all the ways. As someone with no sisters, I felt like I had a hundred at Mi-A-Kon-Da. As someone who struggled with shyness in the past, Mi-A-Kon-Da helped me realize how important it is to show the world who I am. Mi-A-Kon-Da is like a little known secret that no one on the outside understands. But I'll share it with those on the inside for the rest of my life."

"After testing a couple other girls camps with our first daughter we found Miakonda to be everything we wanted in a camp. There is something special about an island camp, where everyone learns to live together and your leaders/counselors are around and can’t just “go into town” easily on their time off. We’ve had all three of our daughters attend the camp, with two so far moving on to the staff. I would strongly recommend Miakonda to anyone interested in developing your daughter into a strong, independent leader for the future."

"There's something magical about Mi-A-Kon-Da that brings us back summer after summer. Something that makes living without electricity for a month or jumping into frigid water worthwhile. I'm not articulate enough to describe that magic in words, but I'm fairly sure everyone here knows what I am talking about; the magic of Mi-A-Kon-Da. When we're on Birch Island we're allowed to be kids and play and learn and have silly fun all day. But, we grow more than we realize at camp, and in the most important ways. We learn to tolerate being away from home, and that helps us grow. Our friendships grow in leaps and bounds here because we can cry and laugh and experience everything together. We come back bigger and better people."

"My time at Mi-a-kon-da has shaped and changed me more than I can ever truly put into words. This is the place where I developed the confidence to believe in myself, played my first song on guitar, completed my first eskimo roll. This is the place where I heard loons call cross the water, floated candles, listened to wind in trees, felt the Canadian Shield. This is the place where I made friendships that transcend summers and distance, felt at home, became who I am. This is the place where I grew up. I am enormously thankful to have found a home at Mi-a-kon-da; those of us lucky enough to have spent summers on Birch Island are never the same."

"My daughter loves this camp! The moment she gets home, she wishes she was back. It is such a special place - girls learn to mentor younger campers, develop leadership skills, and learn to be independent in a supportive environment. One of the best perks is that they are unplugged from social media and can just enjoy making friends and being in nature. I can't recommend this camp enough!!"

"Miakonda is a safe place, where children can take risks, learn to problem solve, find their own way and make their own choices about what they want to do. They learn to more or less “figure it out” so that they can make it work for themselves and for the camp community, and they really do make it work with the incredible support of a caring and dedicated staff. I honestly believe that the time that Lauryn has spent on Birch Island has shaped her personality in many, many positive ways and I also know for certain, that camp is Lauryn’s favourite place in the world!"

"I just wanted to say thank you for the phenomenal job you all did and are still doing with our young women at camp. She just clearly thrived at camp and I'm sure it's the highlight of a long, difficult year and just an amazing experience for her all around... You have the best camp ever and it's been so instrumental in teaching her leadership skills that she uses every day."

"She regaled me with stories of rock climbing, sailing, swimming, eating cupcakes, eating lots of good food, eating, oh yeah did I say eating? She had so much to tell me and the seven hours didn't feel like enough time to tell me all. She has come back braver, stronger, more resilient, and more willing to get dirty rather than focus on the superficiality that society dictates women follow. As a passionate believer of being outdoors and of women's rights, we are so thrilled with her experiences."
