We’ve got some big news!
Thank you for all of the kind and thoughtful words you have sent us following our last announcement. The amount of love and empathy we felt from our community has been incredibly heartwarming. It is times like these where we are reminded of how great our camp community is. We appreciate your support and will do our best to keep the magic of Mi-A-Kon-Da alive during these difficult times.
One of our key teachings at camp for staff and campers is learning how to adapt and overcome new challenges we face. Not being open this summer has pushed us to think outside of the box to develop new ways we can engage and interact with our camp community this summer. We are proud to announce a new program that we have developed in response to this summer’s closure.
Introducing… Camp Mi-A-Kon-Da’s Virtual Summer Camp Program!
The word ‘virtual’ can seem dubious at first given our strong nature focus and device-free summers on Birch Island. Please trust that in developing this program we are not compromising our values, beliefs or philosophy as Camp Mi-A-Kon-Da – we are simply adapting and creating a program given the current circumstances that can deliver a small piece of our camp experience to your home. Yes, we will connect throughout the summer online as this is the only safe option for us all. However, campers will be challenged and motivated to participate in a wide range of camp and community activities that get them outside and away from screens, while still developing socially, physically and emotionally.
Through this virtual program, campers can still look forward to connecting with tent mates and counsellors, as well as participating in traditional camp activities including some exclusive, virtual options. Here are some quick facts about Camp Mi-A-Kon-Da’s Virtual Summer Camp Program:
- Registration is free for everyone
- Registration is open to girls ages 6 – 16
- Registration deadline is June 22, 2020
- New campers are welcome! If you have family, friends or neighbours who have daughters that could benefit from some additional summer programming, encourage them to register
- All virtual programming and tent groups will be staffed by our amazing, trained counsellors
- Structured programming will be less than 5 hours per week
- We will provide instruction on a variety of activities that can be done at home to keep children busy throughout the week
We are pleased to introduce 3 session options for our Virtual Program:
- Full Summer Session: July 6th – August 28th, 2020
- July Session: July 6th – July 31st, 2020
- August Session: August 3rd – August 28th, 2020
Information for CITs
CITs are invited to participate in the Virtual Summer Program as well. You will need to register for it, however you will receive a separate email with details specific to CITs. Please keep an eye out for this email. Our Q&A video below also outlines some answers to common questions we have received from you so far!
Q&A Regarding the 2020 and 2021 Summer Seasons
We have received a number of great questions so far from our community on how this summer might run and how it will impact their future as campers at Camp Mi-A-Kon-Da. In response, we have compiled a video with the help of our staff to answer all of your questions. Check out our Q&A video!
Thank you to everyone who has contacted us and provided guidance on what you would like done with your 2020 payments. For those of you who have requested a refund, they will be processed and sent out this week. For everyone who chose to defer their payments until next summer we thank you and you will see the credit applied to your invoice next year once you register for Summer 2021. If we have not heard from you, not a problem; you will receive your refund shortly.
We are extremely excited to embark on a new journey this summer. Without being able to be at Birch Island, we know that this summer will be different than any other. We are hopeful that we can come together and bring some of the magic of Mi-A-Kon-Da to your home this summer. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for your continued support and encouragement as we continue to navigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. We are certain that, together, we will come out stronger than ever: as a camp community, as young, resilient girls and women and as leaders of the future.
