My first time at camp Mi-A-Kon-Da was in the summer before I started high school. I was really nervous to be spending two weeks away from home, without any of my friends… But those two weeks were better than I could have imagined. I learned so much about friendship and about myself; within the first day my tent mates and I were the best of friends, and I was having the time of my life. When I started school that September, I felt like I was a much more confident person, ready to take on whatever came my way. Mi-A-Kon-Da accepts you for who you are, and my time there helped me become more confident in myself. I’ve returned to camp every summer since then, and it remains one of my very favourite places. The bonds of sisterhood seem to run deep on Birch Island, and it’s a perfect escape from the rest of the world. Every year my experiences seem even better than the last, and I am constantly boring my friends and family at home with ‘One time at camp…’ stories!
This camp is the most fun, empowering, welcoming place anyone could hope for. You can present yourself just as you are without fear of judgement. Mi-A-Kon-Da has given me amazing friendships that will last a long time, unforgettable experiences, and memories that I’ll keep with me forever.
Thank you, Mi-A-Kon-Da!
